Anaemia is one of the most common presentations in haematology and oncology — and its causes are often multifactorial, particularly in cancer patients. At our centre, we take a systematic approach: full blood count, reticulocyte count, iron studies, B12/folate, haemolysis screen, and direct Coombs test are arranged to identify the precise aetiology. Treatment options include oral iron supplementation, intravenous iron infusion (particularly useful when oral iron is not tolerated or absorbed), B12 and folate replacement, Erythropoietin-stimulating agents (ESAs) in chemotherapy-related anaemia, and blood transfusion when haemoglobin drops to symptomatic levels. Underlying causes — including GI blood loss, chronic disease, haemolysis or bone marrow infiltration — are addressed simultaneously.
