Flow cytometry is a powerful laboratory technique that analyses thousands of cells per second, identifying them by their surface markers (CD antigens) using fluorescently labelled antibodies. In haematological malignancies, immunophenotyping by flow cytometry is essential for accurately classifying leukaemias (B-ALL vs T-ALL vs AML), lymphomas (B-cell vs T-cell subtype) and plasma cell disorders (myeloma vs MGUS). This classification directly determines the choice of treatment protocol. At Dr. Joshi's Cancer Centre, flow cytometry samples (blood, bone marrow or tissue) are co-ordinated with specialist haematopathology laboratories to ensure rapid and accurate results. Minimal residual disease (MRD) monitoring by flow cytometry is also used in ALL and AML to assess treatment response.
